YUNA TZ-LAUNCHES-NEGATIVE IMPACT OF TOBACCO IN TANZANIA

Friday 31st May, 2013 – The Youth of United Nations Association of Tanzania (YUNA TZ) together with the Youth Ethics Reform Organization (YERO) have officially launched a documentary as commemoration of the World No Tobacco Day. This documentary namely, “Negative impacts of tobacco in Tanzania” has been sponsored by United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) and World Health Organization (WHO) aiming at creating awareness to the youth about the negative impacts of tobacco. The inauguration of this documentary took place at Habari Maelezo Hall in Posta Dar es Salaam and various representatives from YUNA TZ, YERO, UNIC and WHO were present.

The World No Tobacco Day is always commemorated on 31st May, and this year’s theme is Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship”. This theme is geared towards the youth, who are the target of the tobacco industry’s advertising, promotion and sponsorship. Tobacco nearly kills 6 million people each year, and unless urgent action is taken, the annual death toll could rise to more than 8 million people worldwide by 2030. Studies have shown that tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship is the driver of this global epidemic.

YUNA TZ and YERO in collaboration with UNIC and WHO take this opportunity to call upon the society to support them as they embark the journey of promoting World No Tobacco Day to the youth through the launching of this documentary.  Negative impacts of tobacco in Tanzania” will foster the youth to recognize the negative impacts of tobacco and hence become the ambassadors among societies to fight against tobacco that leads to deaths of many people not only in Tanzania but also around the world.
